The remaining step, a broadcast-quality camera light enough for a jersey, has arrived: stabilised micro-cameras now weigh less than a GPS tracking vest, and prototype chest-mounted units have filmed training sessions in top European academies.

Why This Is Happening
Broadcasters are in an arms race for younger viewers. Traditional TV audiences for live sport are ageing, while younger fans consume the game through phone clips and video games. A first-person feed looks exactly like the games they already play — it converts the broadcast into the visual language of a generation that leagues are terrified of losing. That commercial pressure is stronger than any technical obstacle.
The hardware has crossed the invisibility threshold. The rule in athlete equipment is simple: if a player can feel it, resistance kills it. Sensors have been shrinking for a decade — from vests to chips in mouthguards — and cameras have now followed. Once the device is invisible to the wearer, the objection shifts from comfort to money, and money is a solvable problem.
The data layer is already being sold. Leagues have discovered that biometric and positional data is a product: betting companies, broadcasters, and video games all pay for it. What Could Happen
Leagues phase it in the way they phased in the ref cam: replays first, then live feeds for selected players, then a full "player view" menu on streaming platforms. Athletes negotiate a cut of the new revenue, unions win consent rules, and by 2031 choosing whose eyes to watch through is as normal as choosing commentary language. Biometrics follow, with players opting in for a fee.
Players and unions balk at live transmission: a striker does not want the world seeing his heart rate spike, and coaches do not want opponents mining first-person footage for tactical patterns. First-person video becomes a highlights and replay product — spectacular but delayed — while live feeds remain limited to officials and a few volunteer athletes.
Live biometric data proves irresistible to in-play betting markets, a manipulation scandal erupts — a player accused of masking or faking physiological data — and regulators force leagues to wall off the athlete data layer. First-person cameras survive, but the intimate physiological broadcast dies, and the product stalls as a camera angle rather than an experience.

The single best predictor of the rollout date is not camera technology — it is the collective bargaining agreements in the NFL, NBA, and European football.
